Lang Wethington is an artist working in the Washington, DC / Baltimore area.
My artistic practice is similar to meditation. When meditating, I focus on my breath. When my mind wanders, which it inevitably does, I try to catch it and bring it back to the breath. When painting, I try to focus on the line. When my hand wanders, which it inevitably does, I try to catch it and bring it back to the line. Sometimes, if I’m lucky, I find myself being present in the moment.
I make the portraits because I need to move away from self-centeredness and toward deeper human connections. The idea is simple – may I seek to understand rather than to be understood.
The abstract paintings are about formal design principles and color theory. I’m fascinated by what can happen if I honor rules and work within them. For example, I don’t arrange the shapes. I let the golden ratio do it. I don’t pick the colors. I rely on the color spectrum to do it for me. If I’m true to these ideas, I’m acting less like the author of my work, but instead as a channel of these natural forces.
